Honorable Bruins Birthday Mention – Fred Knipscheer

Fred Knipscheer  9-3-69

The 5′-11″ 190-pound center was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and after some success in the high school rankings, he moved his game up to the United States Hockey League with the Omaha Lancers where he scored 149 points in 95 games. Fred went on to play collegiate hockey with the WCHA’s St. Cloud State team, and after a three-year stint in the NCAA scoring 111 points in 109 games the National Hockey Leagues Boston Bruins came calling for the free agent’s services.

As an undrafted player, Knipscheer played a majority of his first year with the Boston Bruins organization with the teams American Hockey League affiliate the Providence Bruins during the 1993-74 season. Playing in 62 games as n AHL rookie he posted 39 points in 62 games he also had the honor of his first call up to the National Hockey League where he appeared in 11 games posting 3-2-5 numbers. His point total almost doubled in the 1994-95 season when he played in 71 games for the Baby B’s contributing 63 points and got the call for 16 games that year tallying only four points.

In 1995-96 season Knipscheer was traded to the St. Louis Blues only playing in one more NHL career game before he became a journeyman in the AHL and International Hockey League playing his last professional games in 1999-00 spending 40 games with the IHL’s Milwaukee Admirals and eight games for the Cincinnati Cyclones.
